Samuel Roberts - Former York City FC Footballer. CWGC - Casualty Details The 2/5th West Yorks were ordered to Berthen around midnight on the 27th/28th May and arrived in the early hours of the morning in pouring rain. The men were ordered into a wood on high ground just north of the village which was proven to be a good decision for most of the battalion as around 0700 hrs a German bombing raid hit the village where the Lincs and Northumberland Fusiliers were billeted. The village church was hit which was being used to store ammunition setting off secondary explosions. One stick of bombs from the bombers did overshoot the village and landed at the edge of the wood where B Company was deployed causing six casualties including Private Samuel Roberts who played for York City FC before the war.
