Currently researching two men from the same village killed in action on the same day whilst serving with the 8th Bn DLI on the 21/5/1940.

Anyone have access to the war diaries for the 8th Bn DLI for this date?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Hi Russ

Would suggest you dont double up on threads otherwise members wont know which one to post against, maybe Mods/Admin will sort it out.

One of the first questions - what documetary evidence do you have that they were in the DLI - is it possible they were transferred in it?, they may have only been in that Bn a few days before they were killed, all the War Diary will tell you was that they were killed on that day and will be noted as OR (other ranks) it is highly unlikely they will be actually mentioned by name unles they were Officers
This is why the most important move on any research of a soldier is to obtain their service records, this is the framework of truth onto which all other details can be attached

Thanks TD I wasn't sure which forum to post in. I have the service numbers and CWGC registrations for both men and they were both from the same village. I realise that OR's aren't normally mentioned in Diaries but It would help to pinpoint exactly where they were at the time they were killed.

Name them . If you want information ask but give as much as you know that way people wont repeat or duplicate what you already have ? As a guess are we talking about Snowball and Palmer,South Hetton ?

Thanks Kyle It's been awhile since I did any research...

The men are Albert Noble 4455543 Casualty
    and James Palmer 4452916 Casualty
    both from South Hetton.

Both died on the 21st May 1940 and are remembered with honour at the Wanquetin memorial.

    Sorry Russ,
Took the wrong lad from the list of 17, 8th DLI casualties for the 21st May (Snowball is commemorated on the memorial with no details listed ) I`ve sent an email off to someone who may know a little more but I will await their reply.

    Thanks

This was the date of the Arras counter-attack carried out by the 151st Infantry Brigade, of which the 8th Bn Durham Light Infantry was a member Battalion.

There are quite a few threads on this forum that mention the counter-attack, this being one: The Halt Order

And the wiki piece on it here: 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division - Wikipedia

    Best,

    Steve.
