Sergeant John Rookes (4124285) 2nd Special Air Service Regiment, British Army.

For heroic achievement in connection with military operations in Italy on 8th February 1945.

During a parachute operation behind the enemy lines, Sergeant Rookes was detailed to attack the main Aulla-La Spezia road with four machine guns and five men. After carrying out an arduous night march of seven hours duration over mountainous terrain, Sergeant Rookes too up a position off the road and allowed small numbers of the enemy motor transport to pass his position without being fired upon and eventually engaged a large column of enemy motor transport at a point on the road where they passed a column of enemy troops and miles resting by the road. The success of this action was due entirely to the excellent appreciation of terrain shown by Sergeant Rookes in choosing his position, a correct appreciation of the target and time to open fire, and above all for his leadership and determination and complete coolness in close proximity to the enemy.
