I’m looking for any information into the circumstances of the death of Jack Rowe.
    His CWGC details are:

    ROWE JACK

    SAPPER, 74 FIELD COMPANY
    ROYAL ENGINEERS
    SERVICE NO. 3913854
    DIED 18 JUNE 1944, AGE 32
    BURIED DANYGRAIG CEMETERY, RISCA, GWENT

His great granddaughter was told he was killed by a bomb, possibly in Scotland, but has no more information.

The British Army Casualty List just shows Died whilst stationed at Home.

Is it possible he was injured abroad and returned to the UK? There is a death register entry for a Jack Rowe, aged 32, in Hawarden the period he died.

I have his family details already.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi

His SN 3913854 falls within the South Wales Borderers Allocations (3902001 - 3947000) so it looks like was transferred into the RE from the SWB at some point in time.

This is from a RE OOB I found on the internet some time ago

    74th Chem Warfare Coy RE
Formed by Dec 1941 when assigned to 2nd Chem Warfare Group RE.
With British Troops Egypt in Jun 1943. Converted later as 74th Field Coy RE. Served in defence of Cos (???) 3-4 Oct 1943.
Assigned 18th GHQTRE (see below) by 1944. Disbanded Sep 1945+.

Can only find a war diary for Jan 44.

Royal Engineers: 74 Field Company (RE Fd Coy) | The National Archives

18 (1 London) GHQ Troops RE.
6 Served with 21st Army Group 1944-45 [with 101st Beach SubArea at Normandy landing]. Disbanded Sep 1945+. Components included 74th and 84th Field Coys RE.

    War Diary for 1944.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the info Gus, much appreciated. If men were transferred would they have kept their original service number, not be allocated a new one?

    Hi

As far as I am aware, his service number would have never changed.

Only if taking a commission (ie becoming an officer) would a new number be issued.
