328003 Sgt. Fred Henry Bayer, 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, RAC, 8th Armoured Brigade, 30 Corps
Award: Croix de Guerre with Bronze Star

Sgt. Bayer was in the leading troop of "B" Squadron when entering the village of LE BAS AUDRIEU on 9th June 1944, before going on to the hill 103 feature. Our infantry were held up by fire from the village area and Sgt. Bayer's tank led the troop in an effort to force a way into the village. Sgt. Bayer shot up a number of enemy weapons and then charged in. His tank was hit and, after a short time, became immobilised. When he could not shoot any more, he ordered his crew to evacuate the tank, and, although under machine gun fire he led his crew to safety by considerable coolness and presence of mind. He then helped to direct the fire of other weapons on to the enemy strong points.

This NCO fought all the way through France, showing great dash and judgement.
