A short and simple question I hope. My father-in-law (Royal Engineer) was permanently attached to 30 EYorks shortly before his Army discharge in1943. Is it possible to find out where the battalion was based in January 1943?

Someone might come up with an answer for you.
If not, these are the war diaries held at Kew for the battalion for 1942-43.
WO 166 Series is for Home forces

The 30th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment was the renumbered 6th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment and at the time your father in law was demobbed, it was a UK based Holding Battalion. According to ‘The East Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of Yorks Own) In The War 1939/45, Page 153:
It is likely that soldiers nearing retirement would have been amongst those posted to this Battalion.

It had been Hull based throughout its existence, but at the time it was disbanded, on the 11 September 1943, it had been moved out of Hull and was situated in Spalding, Lincolnshire. I have no date of when it moved from Hull to Spalding.

This makes sense as he was in Medical Category 3.

The record that you have posted at message No. 5 above shows him in the 30th Bn East Yorkshire Regiment in Hull at the time of his discharge.

Steve - I feel incredibly sheepish. Thank you. Another step in tracing his journey around the UK from his home in Hampshire.
