Hi all, it's been a while... Looking at this photo, I realised it's the same scene as the pic my grandfather has, but from a different angle: Was there an Alex among them?
Also, some of those faces seem to appear in the Poperinge photo: (to the sound of groans and ''oh, no, not again, not match the faces...'')
Wonder if the Poperinge photo is a section cut from a longer one? It's a bit of a lopsided composition otherwise.
Oh, that makes sense - human nature, Frank, I'm scanning the picture looking for my father and he's just off camera, no doubt!
Frank, I don't know if it's something I did but the pic you put up of tank just now has vanished along with my answer to you about Charlie and Alex. I'll post it again - forgive me if I repeat. No, I don't recognise those names but I'm new to this - only been doing it two days. From writing on back of my Dad's pics, crew was Griggs (don't know his first name), Hermitage (now know he was Ted), Brereton (know now he was Len), my Dad (George Brooks) and Lt Ricketts (now know he was Don). I uploaded pic I have of tank called 52 Coquette. Adam says this tallies with what he knows from his father. The tank in your pic that you've just uploaded says 52 Cestes. I'm ignorant as to when and whether they changed over tanks. but maybe it is not the same crew (?).
If the photo you are referring to is the one with the chap at the front saluting, then, yes, I believe it's after the Ypres ceremony. The chap doing the saluting is Major John Watts (Major commanding A Squadron 3RTR) sadly killed soon after the Rhine Crossing.
Maggie, a great photo of Norman Griggs (right) My Dad has written in the back Norman with QuarterMaster Sergeant at Flensburg
Oh thanks for this, Adam. He's pretty much always smiling or grinning, isn't he? Looks happy in most of them.
Yes, he’s very tall for a cramped tank. Maybe Cass can ask Len what he was like as a person, he’s very smart in that photo compared to the Sergeant.
When I enlarged the photo I could see it wasn't dad. I did post this somewhere already but I haven't a clue where!!
