Would anyone by any chance have a list of officers of the 2nd Battalion, London Irish Rifles? Perhaps copies of a Field Return of Officers from this period?

    Any help appreciated!

    Pember,

May I ask for the reason for your research? My father served with 2 LIR from October 1939 to March 1946.

You found the Officers’ Rolls from 1944/45 which is good.

    thanks

In looking at 2 LANCS FUS’s action and Fus Jefferson’s VC at Cassino, and what 2 LIR endured on their left around Casa Sinagoga at the same time, I think that it is safe to conclude that part of the reason for the award is that he stopped a counter attack that could have really damaged both battalions.

At the time of Jefferson’s action, 2 LIR were being battered from over the River Piopetta and their situation was precarious.

yep.. 2 LIR were pretty occupied to the left of the Lancashire Fusiliers on 16th May 1944. Of course, Cpl Barnes undertook a Victoria Cross worthy action before being killed.

Hopefully, Pender returns to the thread in follow up to his original query.

Where would I find the Cpl Barnes story. He received no award for whatever he did.

It would be good to know.

Great to be able to trace these men.. and perhaps match some of the names to faces.
