    I am trying to find information on the 2nd Bn Royal Hampshire Regiment my grandfather's brother was Frederick Warren and was Killed on 9th April 1943 and was one of 26 soldiers that died on that day from the regiment. I understand he was in France before Dunkirk being lifted from the beaches then went to North Africa with the Regiment I would like to know more about the regiments action in North Africa particularly relating to the date of Frederick's death. There is a family story that when Fred was killed his brother was injured but don't think Benjamin was in the Royal Hampshire Regiment.

    Regards

    Steven,

    The 2nd Hampshires were honorary 38 (Irish) Brigade men in early April 1943 having recently transferred from 6th Armoured Division, stepping in for a period for 2 London Irish Rifles who had been badly mauled on the Bou Arada plain in Jan/Feb.

    On 9/4/43 the Hampshires and the Skins "swept" northwards of Djebel el Mahdi. Although the brigade's diaries suggest it was "successful" the 26 men from 2 Hampshire were killed that day. The battalion diaries will show much more, no doubt.

    just a few clues with information that I had to hand...

    And here is a list of the 27 men of 2nd Bn The Hampshire Regt. that died on that day (generated by Geoff's Search Engine);
