    Jim,

That’s great, many thanks. Some great photos in there as well which really bring out the challenge of the terrain.

    Regards,

    Tom

    Hi
    Assistance requested.
I'm researching a casualty from 2 West Yorks [4536567 Pte George Chase, buried at Alamein] who was (per the casualty list) KIA 1.9.42. 3 others from the Bn were KIA on that date, and one more the following day. This, as far as I can find out, was the day they started the long road move from the Alamein Line to Iraq. There is no mention of casualties in the War Diary for that date. Can anyone shed any light on what happened - perhaps something in the Regimental history? My best guess would be artillery or air strike.
    Grateful for any information.
    Regards

    Graham

    Graham,

I wary of taking the date of death as "gospel" when their injuries occurred days before, but they died on a specific date. Sometimes casualty lists actually state "died from wounds" or "dead in action" or similar. Another member recently drew attention to this.

A WD may often not refer to Other Rank deaths individually.

By that time in North Africa I would doubt it was an Axis air strike. It could even have been an accident handling ammunition etc.

Have you checked the other soldier's numbers and names here to see if they appear? Or any local, back home press articles via the British Newspaper Archive (BNA), £££ req'd, though most UK public libraries enable in-person access.

    Thanks Mike,

That's really interesting. I've got the battalion war diary for that period if you'd like to see it.
