I've searched though loads of posts to make sure I'm not repeating a question but I may have missed it on another post. I'm working on my father's note's about his active service in Normandy and he says he was instructed to walk to Bayeux from Gold beach. This was about 10 days after D-Day. He got a ride from an RAF recovery lorry which dropped him in 'a tree-lined field' at Bayeux where his unit (2 Air Support Signals Unit) was signposted. Dad slept in a field ovenight before being collected by an officer in a Jeep who took him to '2nd Army Headquarters, which was two large mobile caravans in an orchard'. This may have just been Signals HQ... I wanted to know if this was correct and if so does anyone one know the actual location? Any info appreciated. thanks
The first thing to do, I think, would be to check the war diaries of 2nd Army HQ and 2nd Army Signals for June 1944. Those would have the movements and exact locations (map refs, anyway) for the dates in question. Drew5233 on this forum has done a tremendous amount of digging in the war diaries at Kew and has posted scans of many of them here. Perhaps you should contact him, he seems to be very helpful.
