I'm currently researching a member of the Home Guard who was tragically killed in November 1941 by a Spigot Mortar. What I would like to try and do is establish if he was the first - or perhaps the only - person to have been killed by this weapon. The mortar was also issued to the army and, according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacker_Bombard#Operational_history was used in the Western Desert - could anyone do a quick lookup of 'Lowry, Bernard; Taylor, Chris, Boulanger, Vincent (2004). British Home Defences 1940–45 Osprey Publishing. ISBN 1-84176-767-0' to see if it references a source for that information please? I've also read somewhere (probably online) that the Spigot Mortar actually knocked out a German tank in the desert - does anyone have a reliable source for this, or any other documented casualties (in the UK or overseas) caused by this weapon please? - Pete
