It fits in with this episode from ''Welsh Guards at War'' by Ellis page 183

Then as the leading tank commanded by Lance-Sergeant Thomas Hughes of Wrexham was approaching Montcharival over a slight rise of the road it was knocked out by shell fire and burst into flames. The road was effectively blocked and the long column was halted. While they waited for orders Guardsman J Lewis from the tank that had been knocked out came limping slowly down the road . He had several leg wounds and had been dreadfully burnt about the face , neck and hands while trying vainly to extricate Sergeant Hughes from the burning tank. He had struggled back over a mile to warn the squadron that the gun which had hit them was only fifty yards off the road and was bound to hit any other tank that tried to cross the rise. The great pain he was in did not prevent his thinking first of the safety of his comrades.

I'm assuming Gritton was also in that tank hence his being on the Bayeux Memorial as well.
