    11th and 19th February 1944. Mt. CEROSOLA. Map Ref 8604, Sheet 160/II SE, 1/25,000

This N.C.O. commanded a 3" Mortar Detachment during heavy enemy attacks. In spite of the fact that enemy who had reached a position overlooking his Mortar were firing directly at him he kept his detachment continuously in action thereby enabling the forward companies to hold their positions and inflicting very heavy casualties on the enemy.

Lance-Sergeant MAIRS' personal courage and coolness were of a very high order and he carried out his duty in a way which was an example to all.

Signed Lieutenant-Colonel Sir W.V. MAKINS, Bart., Commanding 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS.

    Granted an Immediate M.M.
