Mt. PICCOLO. Map Ref 657294, Sheet 1/25,000, ITALY. This N.C.O. was commanding the leading Platoon of No. 1 Company during the attack on the right peak of Mt. PICCOLO. His Platoon was held up on four occasions by the fire of six enemy machine guns which were firing from the rocky peak which was the objective, at a range of between 50 and 100 yards. By handling his Platoon in the most masterly fashion in extremely hazardous circumstances, and by his own disregard for safety in moving to his leading section in order to give his orders personally, he manoeuvred his Platoon steadily towards the objective, saving many casualties by his calm and determined conduct. By his excellent self discipline, his method of consolidation and his own courage in moving about giving orders under fire, he was responsible for the capture and holding of the objective. Apart from his courage, his initiative and quick grasp of changing situations were invaluable assets to his Company. Signed Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 3rd Battalion WELSH GUARDS. Granted an Immediate M.M.
