2721107 Lance-Corporal Michael BOLTON, 3rd Battalion IRISH GUARDS

On 11 August 1944 at SOURDEVALLE, when his company had come under heavy enemy Machine gun fire and were pinned down, this NCO on his own initiative pick up a bren gun and, firing it from the hip in full view of the enemy effectively silenced the enemy fire for sufficient time to allow restoration of the morale and confidence of those about him.

He then returned to the 2” mortar detachment of which he was in charge and directed fire on to the machine gun nests he had himself located.

Undoubtedly this NCO’s entire disregard for his own personal safety and his cool courage in the face of the enemy did much to restore what might otherwise have been a desperate situation for the men of his company.
