I was wondering if you know who if anyone I could notify about my father being the " strong swimmer" who swam across. He used to tell this story on those rare occasions when he'd talk about the War. In Fitzgerald's History of the Irish Guards in the Second World War, on page 60, it mentions Guardsman(Red) Murphy stripping to the buff and swimming across. My father was a redhead and this is exactly how he described the event. Thanks for any information.

Hi, I've moved your post from
War Diary: 1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS, September 1939 - July 1944
to the thread created for info about your father.
I've also linked this thread to the post you quoted.
Hope that's enough to link the two accounts.

Thanks for your interesting post. Do you have any photos of your father and his time with 1IG that you would care share to here?
