Hi Leon , I've just joined up and saw your message. My father Gnr.George Hodge was in 27/28 Battery 7th Medium attached to 51st Highland Division in 1944 / 45 . I'm just looking at the prayerbook he was given for a service commemorating the end of the campaign in NW Europe. I'm trying to find some more info as to where he would have seen service as he always spoke of his time in France and Belgium.

Hi Leon and Tony - my late father was also in the 7th medium 27/28 Battery (also Dvr I/C) was posted from 3rd Medium in Sept 1938 and left in July 1946. So its exciting to come across fellow sons of ex regiment members.

He was very proud of his time in the regiment. I have studied 'the history of 7th medium regiment' and followed all the battles/movements/events he was involved in. He was one of the badly injured gunners mentioned on page 58 - Me 109 attack - he was in hospital for 6 months before returning to the front.

He is pictured 2nd from right - photo is 1940 I think

Hi Danny, I've done quite a bit of reseach on the 7th Med so I do have a few interesting bits - some copies from the regimental diaries for 1942 for one thing plus a a word doc with details of 27/28 movements and units they were supporting - also I can send copies of the above photos, etc. If you send me your e mail address I'll sort it out...

Brigadier David Baines MBE is the Normandy Veterans Association National President, as well as the president of "The Spirit of Normandy Trust", and when I last spoke to him, very much alive and kicking. He served in 7 Medium Regiment in Normandy. A man called Ashleigh Wright is trying to undertake a TV project to do with the Regiment. I'd be happy to provide introductions if you would like them.

Although not specific to 27/28 Bty, 7th Medium Regiment, RA, I do have quite a lot of information regarding 25/26th (Battleaxe) Bty, 7th Medium Regiment, RA, during the Gazala battle in May/June 1942.

The 25/26th Bty was attached to the 50th (Northumbrian) Division and located in the 150th Infantry Brigade 'box' at the Rotunda Ualeb, which was overrun. At the end of the battle the spare members (those no longer having a gun to man) of 25/26th Bty and 72nd Field Regiment, RA, had been formed into a composite infantry platoon and fought as infantry.

I mention this because there are no War Diaries covering this battle for most of the units invloved, so my source may be valuable to those seeking further information about the 25/26th Bty at this time.

    Best,

    Steve.

David Baines is trying to get a Normandy visit over the 70th Anniversary of D Day next year. We will do a proper Gunner oriented Normandy Tour and get as many veterans as we can.
