24th Guards Brigade, 1st British Division, 5 Corps
2620010 Guardsman Henry HESELTINE, 5th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

This Guardsman conducted himself with great courage and devotion to duty in his capacity as Stretcher Bearer during the operations of this Battalion 22nd April - 7th May.

He continuously attended to and evacuated the wounded under very heavy shell, mortar and M.M.G. fire with complete disregard for his own personal safety.

While the Battalion was on the Western ridge of DJEBEL BOU AOUKAZ this Guardsman and another worked together without any supervision, and never failed instantly to attend to a considerable number of casualties which occurred during ten days of shelling.

One instance of great gallantry was noted on 4th May when this Guardsman with another left their slit trenches under heavy mortar fire and evacuated some badly wounded men to the Regimental Aid Post which itself was under fire.

His whole conduct throughout this period was conspicuously gallant.

    Signed G.C. GORDON-LENNOX, D.S.O., Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 5th Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS

    Granted M.M.
