He was carrying a wounded paratrooper across an open piece of ground which was under very heavy shell and mortar fire. A shell killed the paratrooper, and Guardsman SERGEANT was twice wounded. Nevertheless, suffering intense pain, he contrived to carry the paratrooper and, when finally exhausted, was assisted by two comrades to safety. I did not myself see the action, but I am told that his courage and will to help his comrades was a feature of an efficient soldier, and, in the opinion of the Platoon, was of the highest standard. I strongly recommend him for a periodical award of the Military Medal. Signed Major, Commanding 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS Granted M.M.
