The withdrawal had to be undertaken across an open plain and in full view of the enemy which was under heavy artillery, Mortar and Machine Gun fire. Guardsman WALLER, the driver of a Carrier showed outstanding courage in going out time and time again to bring in wounded. His cheerfulness and disregard for his personal safety was an example to all. He brought in many casualties at great risk to himself and it was largely due to him that the evacuation was so successful. His courage and untiring efforts to bring in the wounded provoke the admiration of all who saw him. I recommend that Guardsman WALLER be given the immediate award of the D.C.M. Signed A.G.W. HEBER-PERCY, Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 3rd Battalion GRENADIER GUARDS Recommended for D.C.M. Granted an Immediate M.M.
