Does anyone know why they had the cloth badges. I was thinking it was just an early in their formation badge because of not enough time to produce the bronze badges but with it also being on the beret it can't as early as I thought
So I'd be interested to hear why they were issued

Something posted (for sale) a good while ago (from an auction dated: 06 Mar 2013 12:00 GMT) which I only stumbled across recently, and haven't (yet) seen elsewhere:

24th Lancers war raised cavalry Regimental Sweetheart Brooch. A fine rare unmarked example, Crow

24TH LANCERS WAR RAISED CAVALRY REGIMENTAL SWEETHEART BROOCH. A FINE RARE

So no idea just how rare these actually are/were.

With the description there of "24th Lancers war raised cavalry Regimental Sweetheart Brooch. A fine rare unmarked example, Crowned crossed lances with silver “XXIV” on the intersection. The cap of the crown and upper halves of the pennants in red translucent enamel, the lower halves in white. Complete with pin fitting. VGC Height 40 mm Raised 30th December 1940, stood down 24th July 1944 and officially disbanded in June 1948."

A rather different design than the ones we are more used to though.

A fashion item, methinks - nothing official (hence the change to "Classic")

    Thanks Phil,

I tend to concur ;-) Perhaps it is related to a/the company called "Classic" and maybe even a item once and/or currently for sale in Australia. One for the grey area at the mo.

Here is another one - again seen on-line a while ago - that too seems to fit perhaps under the "fashion item" category - with the unusual / non-standard crown etc.

Now that one looks like a blazer badge, possibly of recent modern maufacture, churned out by firms in Pakistan. They can vary wildly in quality and the crown notwithstanding this looks like one of the better ones.

Yes, there's a definite "variation on the theme of" attempts being made / out there, I can't really look at the XXIV on this one though, without getting a little bit of a headache o_O :

Here's a real 24th Lancers Blazer Badge - last one from Old Comrades Association stock. There was another variant which had the 'proper' colour for the circlet (blue) and which was the variant most frequently used by the Old Comrades - unfortunately I don't have access to one of those.

.....and a few on show here.

And with the ties too ;-)

The ties very occasionally make it online, often with very little of what I might term "fan-fair" or provenance. And they are often quite "reasonably" priced too, at least from the very few that I have seen. I'll have to see if I can't hunt down an old picture of one of them, though I probably got it from you Steve ;-)

    Yep... :smug:

    Steve
would this be an original badge?
It is the one Reg has on his jacket but it's quite different from yours?

Shaun, not sure if you have seen / saw this too ;-)

    The Tank Museum

"In the early hours of 7 June 1944 Sergeant Reg T. Snowling landed on Gold Beach as a gunner on a Sherman tank of the British 24th Lancers.

The Tank Museum recently interviewed Second World War Veteran Reg Snowling, in order to preserve his memories for generations to come.

The Tank Museum is running a programme of interviews with Royal Armoured Corps veterans who served between 1939 and 1945. The interviews will be added to the museum’s film archive and some extracts used in a new Second World War exhibition currently in development. We would be interested in hearing from any veterans who are willing to take part in a filmed interview. Depending on location, it may be possible for staff to travel to individual homes but on-site interviews in the museum studio are preferred.

Excellent Rob I wasn't aware of it thanks for letting me know.
I clicked the link but my connection isn't playing ball tonight so I'll try again on the morning

There's been a fair bit of 24th Lancer related things on Ebay recently, but then too an awful lot of very long post WW2 reproductions, and things that don't quite look right, as well as being curiously and/or wrongly captioned etc. I guess as always it's a firm case of "Buyer BEWARE".

These are the 24L badges my grandfather had:

    24thL_cm_Scale.JPG

There's an example here of a Firmin badge with slider: British Army Cap Badges of the Second World War

Regarding the reproductions that have been sold as reproductions after the war, I wonder if for example anyone is aware of a catalog or verifiable example of such post WW2 re-produced types?

I'd be particularly interested in some examples of the "enamel badge reproduction" as "sold" - including from when it was that they first appeared. I assume that these were made sometime in the 1970's perhaps? Or maybe even somebody still makes them?

    All the best,

    Rm.

Ps.... Discussion here for example... 24th Lancers Enamel & Gilt - British & Commonwealth Military Badge Forum

i.e. "genuine WW2 period die cast head dress badge made by Gaunt. The badges produced in the 70's of this pattern were die stamped and also made by Gaunt."

And: Die Casting vs Stamping - NADCA Design

Though of course being die cast itself doesn't guarantee it's "genuine WW2" and not a more modern reproduction.

Crikey - I’d forgotten about this thread.

Thank you for your kind comment about my BCBF album, Rob.

In addition, I was most fortunate to acquire a second example of a 24L embroidered slip-on title to make this matched pair.

    Best,

    Marcus

This very pictured example, I would personally avoid. In my opinion, it’s a 1980s/1990s fake that was made in Asia.

    Best,
