RIP. Lt NDR Calkin. The 90th Field Regiment, RA, 50th (Northumbrian) Division, was part on the divisional artillery of 50 Div; having become the permanent replacement for the 72nd Field Regiment, RA, which was overrun and lost at Gazala. It appears from the D-Day landing tables to have entred the fray at H-hour with the 231st Infantry Brigade, in the Jig Sector, Gold Beach; the furthest right/west of the British 2nd Army landings. By strange coincidence Lt Calkin's third forename is 'RIVIERE', with some of 90th Field Regiment, RA, landing with 69th Infantry Brigade on Gold Beach nr La Rivière; the 6th Bn Green Howards landing 1,000 yds east of the German strongpoint there. Source: Monty's Northern Legions - P Delaforce (Sutton). PS. Apologies for posting three days late, but just back from holiday yesterday afternoon.
Adding a little background to the story of Lt Calkin. He was killed (shot in the head) when bringing up the CO's tank (Mary).
