I hear a rumour that a huge budget remake of 'The Dambusters' is in the pipeline by the chap who directed 'King Kong' recently. Anyone heard any more??

Normally I'm dead against these remakes. Did the world need 'Alfie' or 'The Italian Job' remade? I think not. (especially since it gave Jude Law work :glare: )
But Charlie and the Chocolate factory was OK and we're definitely due a high budget ww2 film from a British perspective. Could this be it?

Just found reference to Peter Jackson taking test shots of a Lancaster in New Zealand in May.
I can only find one kiwi Lancaster (NX665?) and that seems to be a non-flyer? anyone know better?

EDIT: Just read a recent denial by jackson however, says he is just interested in Aviation and the Daily Mail is leading the false story. David Frost (who owns the rights) seems to have told a different story though...

The problem with it, is that the viewing public wants more and more each time. the original was made with the help of the RAF, using real aircraft, real locations and the actors having a lot of service experience between them. In addition, the diolauge in the film was based upon the real thing!

Now they have to bring in special effects, the actors will need to be trained in service behaviour - getting drunk in the mess and debagging the padre takes a lot of training! - before they could act.

Also, the original kept to the story as regards the private life of the crews, will the new film make up stuff about them?

No best leave the Dambusters to the original as any remake would detract from the basic story of 617 sqn and their attack on the dams. The loss of eight aircraft for one reason or another does not need the Hollywood glitz.

I'm not so sure though, Much as I adore the original I get the feeling that Band of Brothers and Shaving Ryan's Privates contributed quite a lot to the increased turnout at Armistice day over the last few years, a well-made story of allied success from a non-American perspective could be just what's needed to get people interested who wouldn't normally be and perhaps balance out the years of Hollywood's view a little?
(Though personally I'd rather see a new film following British/commonwealth Infantry than any kind of remake.)

Course I wouldn't be surprised if Guy Gibson turned out to be a plucky American telling the cowardly RAF how it's done and the only British actors playing Nazi's;)

As a big fan of the original film, I say leave it alone!!!
Otherwise we could end up with B17's doing the raid and another film on how the Americans won the war single handed!!!

If they used the original score, script, locations and used actors of the correct nationalities who looked at least something like the person they are playing, and put them through RAF bootcamp, then go ahead and make it with all of that wonderful CGI now available.:icon-mrgreenbandit:
Otherwise don't bother, or I shall hunt you down and kneecap you for starters. :icon_police:

Just hope they don't use Tom "CREWS"!

Apparently Colin Powell wants Nigger in the film, so what's the problem. It was the 40's, it was a common name for black dogs.

Just hope they don't use Tom "CREWS"!

Does this mean that it will be done in latin and aramaic?

Interesting thread. Apparently Sir David Frost was at the Dambusters Inn in Scampton and commented he was in a bit of a quandry about the political correctness of using the n word.

I can see the nostalgia, which is attached to the film, I 've lost count the number of times I've seen it. Still one of my famous films for all it's faults.

Jackson's a kiwi not a yank, and apparently he is a second war 2 buff. It could be a moot point doing a remake, some say it is sacrilege and point to the likes of U -571 and the Italian Job. Maybe they're running out of ideas.

The special effects are better now days, but there is an atmosphere which will be hard to match in the possible new film. The acting in the original was authentic because the likes of Richard Todd had actually served ten or twelve years previous. The original has adopted cult status. Richard Todd is not happy about a re-make.

Peter Jackson was the man of Lord of the Rings could he bring the skills to the new film? The atmosphere of the original and the authentic acting and in black and white and soon after the real thing says it all. The original may have it's faults but it is of it's time.

If they can portray the atmosphere and show it in a respectful light and not make it into a cheapo feel movie, plus modern day special effects and at the same time ban the Hollywood luvvies and the British equivalent, I would be interested in watching it.

But even so the original will be treated as inviolate. Also use the n word - it was the dog's name for crying out loud. If there was an afro caribbean in the film and it was aimed at them I could understand it. It is a corruption of the original word for black from latin. The Italian for black is negro isn't it? Keep things in context.

I always thought the special effects were a bit naff in the original - when the water rushes up the dam it looks like somebody has merged a fountain clip into the reel. It should also be in black and white as well to keep with the atmosphere. Also how about having the cast being unknown actors that way one could watch the film about pre conceptions, and build atmosphere. Didn't do the likes of Stalingrad or the recent film on Four showing the last days of Hitler.

The special effects they have now days could leave one with the feeling that one is almost there. Peter Jackson is supposed to be a big fan of the original, if he keeps true to the facts and genuine in his sincerity it will be worth watching. There is also the spin - off that it will attract a new generation to the event itself and what the crews went through. It was mentioned earlier of the increase in Remembrance day parades. If this film attracts the younger generation and shows what it was really like and gets the recognition for proper heroes and not your modern day shallow impersonations, then good the word is devalued by modern day luvvies.

    Let's wait and see.

I don't have a problem with them making the dog's name politically correct if they make the rest of the movie historically accurate.

The dog's name is a small price to pay for giving the RAF and its airmen the respect they deserve, after years of American-oriented blockbusters.

Jackson is the only Director I would trust with this film, but my God, if he get's it wrong i will personally hunt him down.
You may have guessed I have a serious interest in this film.

    How about "PeeCee" ?

or "Blackie" (or would that wind them up even more?)

As LanceSergeant says, the special effects in the original were a bit dubious. The bombaimer, shown from the back laying on his cushion during the attack, is clearly a dummy. But you can't beat the authenticity of the film. Shame the Lancs went to aluminium smelters immediately afterwards.

Might be worth a remake if its done by someone who cares.

I think that is hitting it on the head. One who cares. I for one would expect Peter Jackson to turn out a decent picture for he is playing with a film classic here.
