Award: Croix de Guerre with a Bronze Star

On 16th August at BONNOEIL refugees were moving along the road from TREPREL in large numbers with carts, horses, cattle etc, and had become an obstacle to military traffic. The refugees had been shelled, sustaining many casualties and were in a very hysterical state as the shelling continued spasmodically. Sjt BOOTHROYD came upon this situation and acted quickly. He established an emergency collecting point and displayed great gallantry, patience and tact in assisting to divert the refugees. A very difficult situation was averted and the lives of many French people were saved through the action of this NCO. His cheerfulness was a great example to the refugees and did much to allay their fears.
