    Hello everybody,

Does anyone have a copy of 2/4 Hants War Diary for August 1944?

Two men from the regiment, Ernest Thomas SAGE and Kenneth REED were killed on 8 August, when the regiment was out of the line as far as I can make out, and were buried temporarily just outside Assisi at a place called San Vitale, map ref. 891854 (This info. comes from Assisi War Cemetery Concentration Report)

It woudl be interesting to know what happened to them.

*8th August " - heavy enemy shelling on HQ causing 3 casualties - one officer etc - possible 2 Ors died of wounds and buried before Regt. moved on

one didn't have to be on the line to die….

Thank you for this, Drew and Tom,

I can only think that the three men injured durng the shelling were taken back to Assisi, where two of them died.

No.5 General Hospital relocated to Assisi in August '44 though I don't know on what date. However, the two casuatleis were not bured alongside men from the hospital at map Ref. 864877 but to the south east of the town at Assisi San Vitale at 891854.

5th General probably moved to Assisi to prepare for casualties from the upcoming battles of the Gothic line which began on 25th August - the only other hospital was the 33rd at Ancona -

where most of the overflow was shipped down to Bari - UK et al…..

    Cheers
