I am trying to confirm the location of the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment during the early part of the war. Unfortunately, there is some conflict with the sources available. Joslen (and Perry) have the battalion at Nisarabad on September 3rd, 1939, but I believe Perry just used Joslen as his source. I am guilty of promulgating this location on the web from my original website on Commonwealth Orders of Battle. Many sites have this same location, such as the Patriot Files, since my site was used as a source. On the other hand the regimental history by Lt. Col Sandes states that the battalion was at Trimulgherry, Secunderabad and did not leave until October 1940. The September 1939 Monthly Army List (corrected to July 25th, 1939) also has the battalion at Secunderabad. Does anyone have any independent confirmation (probably not web-based) of the battalion's location on September 3rd, 1939 (Nisarabad or Secunderabad)?
I don't know if this could help you (and it is web-based) The Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire - Search the Archive If you type Secunderabad that you will get lot of photos taken between 1937-1939. If you type Nisarabad you wouldn't get anything.
Sol: Thanks a lot for your help. The first photo confirms the battalion was still in Secunderabad in 1940 and replaced by the 1st Cameronians in Oct 1940. Other photos place it in Secunderabad in 1938-39 period. This makes Sandes correct and Joslen in error. It is an interesting form of research.
Dryan67 I have found Jolson is wayout at times in his information but if you remember this hhis orbat is still usefull
Oldman: I agree. My copy from 1968 is well-annotated. He is particularly shaky in the British units in the Indian Army section. It seems to have been a bit of an add-on.
