    Hi,

I am trying to find out about a relative of mine who was killed in Italy in 1944.
He was Fusilier Ernest Mieran 5115651 buried in Faenza War Cemetery, killed on 25/09/44.
I believe the 1st Royal Fusiliers were part of the 17th Independent Infantry Brigade at this time?

Does anyone know what this unit was doing at this time?

    Regards,

    Alan.

A correction to my original posting.
A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing !
I had assumed the 17th Ind Inf Brigade meant 17th Independent Infantry Brigade but I have now realised that of course it refers to the 17th Indian Infantry Brigade, which was part of the 8th Indian Division.

    Regards,

    Alan.

    Hello Alan,

My regiment, the North Irish Horse, supported the Royal Fusiliers, 17th Indian (not independent) Infantry Brigade, during June 1944. At the time 8th Indian Division was part of 8th Army, however, later it was attached to the US 5th Army at the time your relative died.

Hi Stan - there is a WW2 battalion history of the 2nd Bn Royal Fusiliers. I don't have my copy in front of me, but I will post details later.

Hi - the records for post-WW2 are not in the public domain and are still 'closed' and likely to be closed for some time. Outside of wartime units were not requied to keep War Diaries, so no records may even exist for the period you want.
