Does Fred's memorabilia still exist?
I've been told by my dad and uncle that, like Fred, Edward rarely talked about the war. Most of my research is new to them as well. I've got a picture of Edward at a post war Recce Association do, probably 1950's. I've got the tie and blazer badge that you can see in the picture.
Thanks for the book tip. Never heard of that one before. I found a second hand copy on Amazon for £3 so I've ordered it. Looking forward to a good read.

It does, I'm the custodian. That's how I learnt that he had been driving around with it in the back of his car, he opened the boot and handed me this bundle! His wife said it was evil and wouldn't have it in the house.

We're looking for any information about Les Garbutt who we believe served in Reconnaissance Corps, RAC 1st recce (his best friend is on Commonwealth War Graves Anzio records). Les served in North Africa, Anzio and Palestine in May 1945. We have a medal he won in the Open Palestine Games 440yds race. Les talked a lot about Anzio but never claimed his medals. Any information much appreciated.

There is very little information in the public domain, some, but not much, it would help with more detail, full name presumably Leslie, middle name, when born, when died, where from. Servicemen often transferred between units so a regiment at one particular time doesn't mean he spent the entire war with them.

 

Thanks. We do not know his service number, We have his army number and the date he enlisted but have been unable to trace any records on-line. We will try to get a copy as we are the eldest son. Thanks for your reply, we have ordered the book' A conscript's journal'.

 

What number do you have, bear in mind you do not need a service number to apply for his records, can you not give more information?

 

We have a small book Army book 64 Soldier's Service Book with instructions to always carry this book on your person. It has an army number on page 2 Soldier's name and description on Attestation. However, this number does not give us his army record. Les did not take his service medals so does not appear on Medal Rolls.

 

Hello Brian.

Have you tried putting the Army Number that you have for Les in The National Archives "Discovery" search facility?

Just searching using "L Garbutt" came up with 25 possibilities, many of which were references to service records that TNA Kew hold.
