Paul - excellent research and time to assemble all those of 6th Armoured's Recce regt who always did an excellent job "up front" - putting all those names in date order would give you the exact centre line of the Divisional Advance from almost at Algiers - Bone - Medjez - Tel El Kebir -Massicault - Enfidaville even down to Sfax - then on to Cassino - Bolsena - Assisi - Arezzo - Florence - Coriano - Padua and into Austria at Klagenfurt...well done !

One point though - the name of the Officer buried at Bayeux - might just be of the 2nd Battalion ...?

    Cheers

    Paul -
he might have been seconded to them as instructor as the 1st Batt had lots of experience to pass on to the untried 2nd Batt - another buried in Prague ? - nearest we got to there was Vienna and not the whole division !

    Dear Recce_Mitch

I work with Sutton Grammar School Combined Cadet Force and we are currently undertaking research into 97 past pupils of the school who died during WWII. Our aim to to find the details and stories for each of these men which will then form the basis of a commemorative book which will be published at our centenary in 2015. We are also building a new memorial to these soldiers made from 97 rocks, each collected from a different peak in the UK by one of our current cadets.

One of the names we are researching appears in your post above and so I wondered if you had any more information on him or on his regiment and their tasks and movements during the war?
    Your information above was:
    Trooper MAURICE OLIVER WRIGGLESWORTH
7951693, "C" Sqn. Derbyshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps
who died on 16 May 1944
Son of Cecil Stanley and Elsie Evelyn Wrigglesworth, of Epsom Downs, Surrey.
    CASSINO WAR CEMETERY I. K. 18.

Very grateful for any information or ideas on where else to look.

    Many thanks

Wonderful idea. I run tours to Cassino and am next there in Sep 13 so if you would like a photo of Tpr Wrigglesworth's headstone, do say.

The book on the 6th Armoured div is the " Mailed Fist " and gives a good account of the 6th Div's travels during the war..but you might be better off getting the War Diary from either Drew or Psy org - which may or may not mention the

Trooper by name - but essentially from his number I would assume he joined the Army prior to 1942 - and he lost his life at the beginning of "Operation Diadem" which was the 8th Army's assault on the Liri Valley at the same time as the Polish

force was attacking the Monastery for the last time at Cassino - so he probably took part in the various battles in both Algeria from the landings in November '42 and all through Tunisia until landing in Italy around the March/ April of 1944

when the 16/5th Lancers were involved in the battle at the Cassino Station with the 28th Maori battalion of the New Zealand Division...

    Good luck with your book

    Cheers

this painting was found in a Belper charity shop. We think he may have been in the Derbyshire Yeomanry. We are trying to find out his name.
We don't know that he was in the Derbyshire Yeomanry but just hoping he may have been in our local regiment. The only information we have is that there was a note on the painting saying 'Belper Soldier. We have been checking his medals out he has from left to right.

    Military Cross

    1939 - 45 Star

Africa Star (with clasp MID or King's Commendation for Brave Conduct - not sure which)

    Defence Medal

    War Medal 1939 - 1945.
