Light Tanks. I cannot make out the serial numbers which are just visible.

Possibly AH, AW or AM 622 and 627.

    Great pictures, really great.
I have managed to buy two boxes of HaT WW1 Britisg Infantry (Tropical) Plastic Soldier Review and wondered if these would be suitable for the interwar period out in Indian.
If they are, what colour would their battledress be, looks more lighter than khaki.
If anyone knows the colour and if Vallejo have a match I would be very greatful.

More snow. It was always very cold on the N.W.F. during the winter months with the strong winds whistling out of the Khyber Pass.

Not only winds but trains too, via the Khyber Pass railway.

  8. These are terrific images and it is both a pleasure and an honour just to look at them as part of research into those old NWF days of the British Army. Thank you, High Wood!

You are very welcome, thank you for the feedback. If you have a particular interest in the North West Frontier I posted a similar album from my collection in the Royal Artillery section a few years ago.

    High Wood,

The blockhouse in Post 47 is familiar to me. I took a photo when there pre-9/11 on holiday! No trains running by then

Lucky man, I did not get further north than Lahore and that was back in the mid 1980s.

When I get home I shall dig out the photograph and add it here. Plus the date.

I was there in 1997, on the Pakistani side and we had an escort from Peshawar through the Khyber Pass to Landi Kotal, the last village on the road to Afghanistan where foreigners could go. The shopping centre was not dominated by gun makers, though in back streets you could buy small weapons and grenades. Local legend was the week before a confrontation led to exchanges of gunfire, until it was too dangerous and the Khyber Scouts, a regular army unit intervened - from their fort above the village. It was disconcerting to see a senior citizen walking through the village with a MG42, with a belt of ammo.

I don't suppose that this sign was still there when you visited but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

    High Wood,

We were limited to the roadway and a cafe and nearby shops @ Landi Kotal. I did not see any signs. The train has long stopped running up and down the line.

Quite likely, as the attached slightly wider shot is of Razmak circa 1947 when Brig RS Steed was there prior to its evacuation. There seem to be a few recognizable buildings common to both shots. RazmakCamp47wide.jpg

Some newly acquired photographs from another Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry album.
