I am trying to find the Military Medal citation for:

6408342 Pte. Albert Richard Edward BINSTEAD M.M. 1st Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment

Does anyone own a Royal Sussex Regimental history?

    Most strange.

Nothing on Discovery or the London Gazette even with lots of permutations of names and initials.

    Where is that text from?

C.F. it is from the Worthing Gazette, i've drawn a blank with National Archive and London Gazette?

Throwing knives? Was he on special service?

Maj-Gen Hopkinson was 1 Airborne Div.

Thanks TD, he is going to be a hard man to track down.

6408342 is a Royal Sussex Regiment service number, he appears to have transferred to the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. He transfers to the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment 1.10.1940 and then the Essex Regiment 21.9.1945.
He leaves the Army, rejoins, in 1947 he is serving with the Carrier Platoon, S.P. Company, 1st Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment.
In 1949 he is serving with the 2nd Battalion Parchute Regiment.

C.F., I'm wondering, take a look at his portrait, I couldn't decide if he has S.A.S. wings. They appear to be upside down if they are?
I'm struggling to find a Queens West Surrey Battalion in the Sicily campaign?

He also saw action in Greece in 1944.

He served with 2nd Parachute Regiment. He was charged with Bigamy in 1948 but theres no longer any mention of the medal or the deeds?

I'm thinking one of the units in 1 Airborne Div in Sicily and 4th Essex in Greece--at least I hope so!

Edit: Mr Jinks has it. Bigamy? Could he have lied about the medal to the press??

Exactly my thoughts, that is why I have been trying to trace the citation.

Regimental attestation records rarely list transfers to the Special Forces.

Very likely 1/4th Essex in Greece. You have him posted 21/9/45, the same day that the draft of 72 ORs joined the battalion at Edhessa.

    One more for my lists--cheers!

Discharged 1945 . Re-enlisted 1946 in the `courtship` he described himself as a Middle weight Army boxing Champion. He was jailed for 3 Days released immediately . He made a statement whilst in Germany?
