A lady has contacted me via the site's email as she is in possession of a 1941 letter addressed to one Otto Stoiber, found in the Desert.
She would very much like to return it to the right family, or even original recipient (I haven't seen the contents, only the envelope).
Any ideas or suggestions on how to achieve this?

    Gefreiter (?) Stoiber, 20115, Lahn.

Try contacting Smudger in Berlin. He might have some useful contacts via the RBL there. Be fascinating to see how this ones pans out.

Thought I should rotate the pencilled on text, just to make it easier to read for any passing browsers.

""unknown Soldier" Found by knocked out German Field Gun Battery in desert 1941"

Not clear whether it was just the letter, or also the 'Unknown soldier' himself (and all that implies) that was found at the battery - I may have to ask the lady if she knows any more.

Can anyone tell if any of them are 'Arty chaps' from their uniforms?

three Naval types and one mountain troop is as much as I can see.

Red piping are Arty, aren't they?

Also, looking at the various pictures of camp13 here
and it states that many of the prisoners are Italian and
German, captured in the Western Desert

I have downloaded the thread details and will be with the Bundeswehr reservists this weekend as I had an invite to attend with them at Kladower Christkindlemarktes.

We will be publicising the RBL as the location is close to the site of what was Montgomery barracks, with lots of British connections.

They are letting us share one of the market stalls near the field kitchen!!:D

I will speak to some members regarding seeing if I can identify the soldier.

I cannot make any promises but will see what I can do.

    Regards
    Tom

Would a German newspaper run a story on it?

    Owen,

I would think the local paper that covers the area where the letter originated would run with this kind of story.

    It is certainly an option.

    Tom

I would imagine that a local area newspaper would be well interested in it.

This is assuming he was repatriated to Germany post war.

What was the release process in Australia? Were POW's
given the choice of staying in Aus and starting a new life
or did they have little choice in the matter?

I'm sure there must be paperwork relating to him in the
Australian archive and we do have his POW number at
    least

The WASt should be able to help out.
And maybe the local authorities/newspapers etc. of Bad Ems could help out, that's where the sender lived.

I don't think that randomly calling Otto Stoibers is a good idea, the name is quite common.

especially as this chap is Stoiber, not Stoibers!

Also, what are the contents of the letter? It might
be awful news or a 'Dear John'. There might be a
reason it was left in the Desert by Otto!

That was a plural, since Verrieres named two...

Adam, is it possible to see the letter?
