Following on from my BBC History magazine article, below are two Google Earth links for the Crested Eagle and Devonia the 'best' two wrecks in terms of condition, access etc. They are only visible at low tide. Crested Eagle Devonia
Cheers for that Paul Having just checked the GE links I noticed there are some more wrecks....I don't suppose you know what they are too by any chance? Cheers Andy
What they used to look like. Crested Eagle on here General Steam Navigation Paddle steamer Postcards Devonia
Here's a GE print with the Crested Eagle and Devonia marked and the two unidentified ship wrecks circled. Anyone know their names? I'm wanting to place a RBL Poppy and Cross at each at the end of this month so the names would be of help. Cheers for any help Andy
I don't know if this helps any but here is a list of Dunkirk Wrecks: Forum Marinearchiv | Duenkirchen Regards Hugh
I was speaking to my father tonight... He told me that he has been on the Crested Eagle just before the war. Around 1937/38 he travelled on her from Greenwich to Southend Pier on a day tirp which he thinks was her regular peace time journey.
He's right, see link in post #3 , there's a postcard that says, London Bridge, Southend, Margate, Ramsgate.
Does anyone have any further sources of info on this ship? The link Owen provided is of the Devonia that was lost and the ship appears to be a lot bigger than the wreck. After a flick through a few of my books there appears to have been two Devonia's involved in Dynamo, a paddle steamer and a motor boat. Of the two it appears that only the paddle steamer was lost. The Evacuation from Dunkirk by Naval Historical Branch, Ministry of Defence says she was beached at La Panne and abandoned which is some way from Bray Dunes (I wonder if she floated down on a high tide-Is that possible?). Secondly the actual wreck appears to be a lot smaller than the pictures I have of the Devonia, one in particular of her beached with some German troops stood near to her. Confused
Andy - one of the main sources for us were local French archaeologists who have retireved items from the wreck that showed it was the Devonia. Remember the wrecks were heavily salvaged both during and after WW2. There is a shot of the Devonia on Pathe News if I remember correctly.
Cheers Paul. I have a picture of her in a book beached at La Panne which was my main worry as its a fair distance up the coast. Defo appreciate the decline in condition of both ships over 70 years mind. I'll post all the info and pics at the w/end I think. Cheers again. Andy
Hello Alastair. I don't suppose you took any pics of the Devonia or Crested Eagle? I'm dying to know what the crosses are like that I placed on them last year. I'm assuming they are still there
There is a French/Belgium website that lists all wrecks off the coast, their location, photo's etc. but the name escapes me - Jan or Rich Payne may know it. I have it in the history on my old laptop but not this one.
Hello, I have a. kmz file for google earth with much wrecks May and June 1940 at Dunkirk that I made from a french site "dkepaves". I would like to share with you but I do not know how to join the forum. Best regards
