    Hi,
My Father trained at Lowther Castle on CDL Grants any identifcation of regiment would be a big help. He also did exercises in South Wales prior to D-Day then sent to India May 1945.
    Thanks,
    Brian.

My grand father trained on the CDL tanks with the 11th Royal Tank Regiment.
@stoney54 Sounds like your father may have been in the 43rd Royal Tank Regiment. They trained at Pendine Sands in Wales in November 1943 practicing beach landing. They also operated CDL tanks in India in 1945.

@jeffbubble Are you sure its greystoke castle that you mean? Training on the CDL was mainly at Lowther Castle in Cumbria. The 2 are only about 10 miles apart.
Here is a bit more info: http://home.tiscali.nl/hgmkuip/blerick/cdl_story_lowther.html

Forgive i am new member and just getting sorted.

I have my Dads was diaries and some recollections of bits he did mention years back, he was at Lowther Castle on CDL tank and also at Castlemartin. He reports Pembroke a few times and also Narberth, and several "schemes" they trained on but does not mention Pendeen by name, but presume plenty of space to train.

The CDL Tanks here were an abortive idea which went no where as they had searchlights mounted to light up a battle zone - this was superseded by what was known as Monty's Moonlight of RA

searchlights lighting up low lying clouds and reflected onto the battle field - first used in NWE in August '44 then on 17th September at Coriano in Italy witnessed by myself and noted that it needed

more work as a battalion of infantry was wiped out as the enemy saw them approaching - when it was supposed to blind them - this was improved later ...

    Cheers
