Finally got around to scanning all the service records from Andrea's family. He's the first of the three-One of her Grandfathers. As always any comments greatly appreciated.

Can someone confirm that I'm correct in thinking he spent his war with 1/4th Battalion so I can pull his units war diary at Kew.

    Cheers

It looks like he was a regimental butcher serving at 19 ITC at Formby and later at 2 ITC at Oswertry

Yes mate, they lived in the same house for next sixty years after the war in Walkden. Andreas grandmother passed away last year and her grandfather nearly 10 years ago.

    Hi Drew

He was with the 1/4th from late 43 to Aug 45 - then went to 19 ITC - he was a Mess Orderly and obviously an army butcher. He was signed off by 2 ITC so moved there - possibly at the latter end of his service (they kept him on to 1947!).

Doesnt look like his health was the best.

19 ITC at Formby was the South Lancs training centre, so he pretty much started there as a recruit, and ended up working back there.

1/4 time at Shoreham would almost certainly reveal coastal defence work (similar to 2/4).

1/4 and 2/4 were the pre-war terrier Battalion, many of the original volunteers were posted out and the Battalion made up with draftees etc. These formed part of 4 Ind.Co. in Norway, and then 4 troop, 2 Commando. 2/4 went on to form the core of 13th Bn Para Regt.

I am in regular contact with an ex-1/4 terrier, but he transferred prior to your man joining.

George should have been issued the 39-45 star.

    Pete

I wonder if the EMS Hospital was for respiratory diseases?

    History of UHSM

The idea of Wythenshawe Hospital was initially discussed in 1939 but, with war imminent, the priority was to adapt Baguley Sanatorium to cope with the expected rush of civilian war casualties. An Emergency Medical Services (EMS) hospital - consisting of rows of wooden huts - was constructed and used to treat soldiers who had been injured or burned. As a result, Baguley became an early pioneer of plastic surgery. The Plastic Surgery Unit transferred to a purpose built unit at Withington Hospital in 1969.

    Doesn't quite fit.

It was the 'S' that I thought could be Sanatorium, but not as it turned out!

EMS is Emergency Medical Services Hospital, the one on Southport was demolished a number of years ago.
