I think that with a 7 digit number he would have to have joined TA prior to 03/09/1939.

I do know that 84,500 series was a 1932-33 enlistment with RA.

It appears that I owe an apology all around as on Docker's initial posting I mis-read the service number as having eight digits thus fixated on the entry of 1942 - which confused the long service term since clarified by Horsepassenger
