Hi folks, I have just applied for my late Grandad’s service records and while I eagerly await their arrival I thought I would share a few bits and pieces we found after my dear Nan’s passing on 13th Dec aged 97 I hope it’s ok to post them here and that you don’t mind me sharing. I can’t wait to find out more and look forward to no doubt picking your brains in the near future Karon.
Hello and welcome to the forum. Thank you for sharing your grandads personal items. If you have any questions, we will try to help; it's no problem at all. . Lesley
Hi again, As predicted here I am back to you looking for help I’ve finally received a jumble of bits of paper from MOD, purportedly my grandads service records lol. All I can make out so far is Det 375, Det 450, Battalions 1, 2 and 3 (seems like he changed Bn a lot) and that he was a naughty boy lol I do know for definite already that he was in Italy and Sydney. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in taking a look for me and trying to glean a bit more info from his records? I won’t post the records on here as they’re obviously full of personal info but would be happy to direct message if anyone would like a look. Thanks in advance.
Please would anyone care to take a look at the attached records, I can't make head nor tail of them My avatar was a picture taken in Italy so I know Grandad was definitely there. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated x
By coincidence AM today I have been looking online for information on a Royal Marine Engineer who died in Holland in march 1945. This site suggests he could have been part of 3 Commando Brigade, posted to the far East - Burma. I have no idea whether he was with them, nor what they did! See: Special Service (Commando) Group, Brigade, and Brigade Signals | ͏ To his RM Service Record a mass of details. I've never seen so much before, although I am not an expert. I may return to have a look, other tasks now.
Hi Karon, Thank you for sharing your grandfather's service records and other documents. I have attempted to pull together a summary of his service for you. He had a very busy war with the Royal Marine Engineers, being sent from the U.K. to the Mediterranean Theatre where he worked in Tunisia (possibly) and Naples (certainly, as per the photo and documents you have). After returning to the U.K., in 1945 he was then sent to Australia where he remained (I think) until returning to the U.K. in January/February 1946. He left the service in May 1946. Please see the attached file. Steve
Oh my gosh, thank you, thank you, thank you x I couldn’t even have started trying to decipher those records It’s absolutely fascinating to see where he was and when, I was unfortunately only 7 when he passed so am so appreciative of any info. Good to see that he apparently avoided the horrors of D Day You sir are an absolute gentleman and I owe you several pints for taking the time to unravel this for me
