Taken from P F Stewart's History of the XII Royal Lancers:

The material equipment was not of the same order as this human metal, the Morris armoured reconnaissance car being under-engined, under-armed and under-armoured; being in fact, although the latest thing of its kind, already obsolescent.

I've just come across this site whilst delving into my Fathers backround, particularly the circumstances behind the award of his DCM. It was great to see the actual report. I have a number of photos and letters to him (from various CO's I guess) congratulating him on his award. It is difficult to read the signatures but one dated 13/6/40 looks to be from A Hulton Harrop?; another dated June 13th from Tony Warre? and a third from A J Gemmall? There is also this photo; my father Arthur Max Pearton is seated second from the right as you look at it. Some seem to be holding French flags (but it is in B&W). I have no idea where or when it was taken or who anyone is. Does anyone out there have any ideas?

Thats a great pic. I'm no expert on uniforms but the British ones are early WW2 or pre war.

I think it maybe a competition photograph as the dark uniforms are definately French but some of the others maybe Italian or Spainish? They certainly have a Mediterranean look about them.

    J A Warre was a Lieutenant in 12 Lancers

    A S Gemmell was a Captain - Acting Major in 12 Lancers

Info from the Oct 1939 War Diary - I can't find the other chap in the 39/40 war diary.

I've just found this in a list of 'Amorial families':

Hugh David Montagu Hulton-Harrop, Lieut. 12th Roy.

    Lancers.^. 1905. Seats — Bardsley, nr. Ashton-under-Lyne ;

Gatten, nr- Pontesbury. Salop. J?es. — Gatten Lodge.

    Pontesbury, Salop,

The address on the letter to Dad is the same, (ie Gatten Lodge). The initial could be an 'H', but it looks more like an 'A'. The last sentence says...'I trust, with a bit of luck, to be back with the regiment before long'. Any further ideas of places to search?

You could try contacting the regt musuem - I think its in Derby or the Tank Museum at Bovington.

I checked for 'Montagu' in the war diary officer returns and he's not listed.

H D M Hulton Harrop is listed in Appendix II in Stewart as having joined the regiment in 1925.

I wonder if he was in one of the Military Missions during the France and Flanders Campaign then. IIRC Hopkinson's had quite a few 12 Lancers including that missing chap thought to be in Esquelbec Cemetery.

Part of the letter says, 'I had heard how brilliantly the regiment had done under the Colonel from G.O.C. Western Command. Whilst lying in hospital I thought a great deal of you all.....' Maybe he was injured or ill? I'm really just interested in all the background to my Dad's DCM and the people involved.

It sounds like Hulton-Harrup was 'extra-regimentally employed', i.e. he had a job away from the regiment. A staff post could have easily brought him into contact with the General Officer Commanding Western Command, one of the administrative commands in the UK.

Excuse me for butting in here guys, but could I ask a 12th Lancers question please.

Were they a Recce Regiment or an Armoured Car Regiment in WWII?
Or were they both at differing times?
    Thanks,
    David.

Can anyone date this uniform as I'd like to know roughly when the photo was taken. I would think it's early to mid 1930's.

This pattern of service dress was in widespread use between 1922 and 1939 which makes exact dating difficult.

He has a good conduct chevron and what looks to be a marksman's proficience badge. I don't recognise the trade badge. Is it a wreath with a crown above ?
