I have been trying to find photos of members of this Battalion but getting fustrated by lack of info on the web, i have spent hours going through various sites although there is a quite a bit of info there is hardly any pics, i have also tried various books like Go to it, and a couple of books wrote by former members of the unit but not had much luck so far. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Hi Reddevon, Welcome to the forum. I have been researching a group of Devonshire soldiers that took part in the 1943 Chindit operation in Burma. Three of these were 12th Devons who presumably performed the battalion's coastal defence duties from the Higher Barracks in Exeter, before sailing off to India. It seems the battalion was destined to be involved amongst the more 'Special duty' operations of WW2, in one way or the other. Steve
The 12th Devonshire have benn discussed on here before. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/airborne/33019-12th-battalion-devonshire-regiment.html http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/airborne/33042-hello-help-12th-devonshire.html
There's a few on this thread from WW2Reenacting: WWIIReenacting.co.uk Forums • View topic - 12th Battalion Devonshire Regiment
I must get a copy of Jeremy Taylor's book, i know i would be able to get one from the Devon and Dorset museum in Dorchester, They have a few photos in the archives section at the Keep but most are deuplicated in Go to it, as for the ww2reenacting forum link i know that chap very well, but please keep the photos coming chaps the more the merrier
Here is another picture of the 12th Devons from Taylor's book. The book is available form Abebooks.com. See the link: Jeremy Taylor - The Devons - AbeBooks
Are the pictures in Jeremy Taylor's book poor quality because they both look very grainy when i enlarge them, unfortunatley when pictures are taken of a unit in combat they could be any Airborne unit, which makes it very difficult to identify them as Devons
The two Hamminkeln pictures above are by Christie who came in by glider on Varsity. There's a chance others taken by him in Hamminkeln where the unit isn't specified could be 12th Devonshire? But goodluck on trying to run that down. And yeah I figured you knew that guy, but thought the link would have some appeal to others.
