SEARCH brings up no obvious threads on which to post information about this unit, so I've started a new one. The following brief history (as noted an anonymous extract from the Burma Star Association's magazine) gives a skeleton outline of the unit's service. The article was extracted from a 1997 publication I recently purchased for a few pounds. It's an odd little book; as the author himself says, 'I feel that the poets will say "This is not poetry" and the historians will say "This is not history". In truth it is a scrapbook or a post-dated journal in which we find letters home, sketch maps, ephemera and photographs nestling among an assortment of lightly annotated verse. The Japanese get a bit of a look in, too--and not as faceless baddies. Here's the author's biographical sketch: And here's a sample of the content (104pp):
Thanks for posting that as I'm currently researching my wife's dad's 129 (Lowland Scottish) Field Regiment R.A. WW2 service.
Best of luck. I'd be interested to see any information you turn up. You could post here or start your own thread.
Just info from the usual sources at this stage, Burma Star Association, Wikipedia, Google, general Burma artillery photos, etc. The skeleton outline of the unit's service and the allies command structure you posted above is very good, informative without being too involved. The war diary would make interesting reading, is it readily available on line? I have his full service records, 911255, Cunningham, Ronald, from Portobello, Edinburgh. His unclaimed medals are due to arrive here in Australia soon. Seems a lot of the ex WW2 servicemen didn't claim their medals, my Dad went all though the war with Montgomery's 8th Army and never claimed his medals. They just wanted to forget about it and get on with normal life I guess. GL.
Not to my knowledge. Unless somebody has already done so, you'll need to get a copy from the National Archives at Kew. The official copying service is exorbitant, but there are members here that offer more sensible rates.
