Just found this thread which is very interesting. They are a difficult unit to follow, particularly in the early days rather like the East African Mounted Rifles in WWI.

Just one point -the photo of the M8 Armoured Car. That is in East Africa because the shrubbery is Acacia drepanolobium -aka 'Whistling Thorn'. There are photos kicking around of the VJ Parade in Nairobi with M8s, so they did exist in East Africa. As you guys have mentioned, their existence in the Far East is unclear. They were certainly in Ceylon with Marmon Herringtons... again photographic evidence, albeit date unknown.

I don't think the armoured cars are M8s.... More like Humbers.

That's an impressive identification of the shrubbery!

Ah... we might be looking at different photos of armoured cars. I was looking at the photo of the Regiment on parade in Ceylon, awaiting inspection

The original post from way back when, has reference to a Brig. Briggs photo in the NAM (see M8 Greyhound armoured car, East African Armoured Corps, 1944 (c) | Online Collection | National Army Museum, London) which says its an M8.

My plant ID is better than my armoured car ID -but is that a major faux pas on the NAM's part? The 'Whistling Thorn' thing -its common as can be in Kenya, and very easily recognisable. I also do not know of anything in the Far East that has the wee galls on the tree like that, but maybe some botanist will prove me wrong.
