    Hi All
I have written a history of this (my fathers) Regt in WW2. Have lots of info, War Diaries, Fire Plans, AGRA Diaries etc, but would like to contact more veterans or relatives of the unit, or infact anything that might be of interest.
    thanks
    Rob D.

sounds like another book I will have to add to my library!

Rob, if you need any help regarding terminology, just ask, its my specialist area, and oh what a sad person I am!!!

Seriously, you only have to ask, if I don't have it listed already, I probably know someone who will kow what it means.

And please do keep us posted with information about your book, well done for undertaking this.

    Phil

Definition of a Pepperpot in WW2.

A Pepperpot: barrage was where guns of all types (artillery, mortars, machine guns, infantry guns, anti-tank guns, anti-aircraft guns, naval guns, tank guns) and even aircraft were used.

In Operation Veritable and Blockbuster for example, the Land Mattress was added to good effect.

Put another comment about "Pepperpot" in your 2 AGRCA thread by mistake.

You only have to ask, the definition I give in my book is:

Pepperpot Introduced in late 1944 the "Pepperpot" involved a concentration of weapons, including tank guns, mortars, anti-tank and Light Anti-Aircraft guns firing into an area. It was employed as an element of major fireplans.

    Next?

    Hi Rob,

My Grandfather in-law was a Gunner with the 10th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery.
He was called up on 30th May 1940 and released on the 15th March 1946. It is said he landed on Sword beach on D-Day + 1. Also that he was positioned in the tower of a monastery with a wireless presumably in an OP capacity but where or when I do not know.

We have sent off for his service record but have so far only received a letter saying the search may take a further six months! Any suggestions of where to find more information unit diaries or wartime biographies of people in the same or similar regiments would be gratefully received.

We have one photo of him in uniform with a tower and a US style truck in the background I will try get permission from the rest of the family to post it and his number etc here.

Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading the book.

    Kind regards

    Jez Williams AKA OP-researcher.

Thanks Andy, like you say where are the rest of the diaries? I'm sure there is some great info there but I dont have time at the moment to unravel how to access it unfortunately.

What is the difference between a Field Regiement and a Medium Regiment ? Is is the latter simply a reflection of the guns used?

Do you happen to know if anyone from the 10th has written a war time (WWII) biography?

    Cheers

That's exactly it, Field Regts had 25-Pdrs whilst Medium had 4.5-inch and 5.5-inch guns.

    Hi Jez

As Rob D will tell you when he appears, 10 Medium was formed in December 1942 from the 16th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. That's probably why you can't find any war diaries from 1940 until that date.

Anything from your Grandfather-in-laws pics or paperwork that suggests that he was a Fusilier before he became RA?

    Thanks Phil, thanks Robert,

Other than the partly erroneous (Landing was apparently July 12 not D-Day +1)information I've provided above I know nothing more. However I suspect armed with new information memories and sideboards will be searched and new pointers come to light.

The following website has filled in some gaps for me and may be of interest to others it seems to be a part electronic copy of a book called "The History of 9 Army Group Royal Artillery" which included the 10th Medium Regiment when not under anyone elses command.

    Thanks again.
