Known as "Tartan Tam" as he was an ardent Scottish nationalist. When commanding a Machine Gun Corps Company in 51st Highland Division on the Western Front (he considered his posting to the MGC from being the battalion machine-gun officer as deleterious to his career) he lobbied for the introduction of the TOS for Scottish-associated MGC units, successfully. He tried earnesty to keep non-Scottish units (and preferably officers, too) out of his division but did accept some Lowlanders. Given that Monty considered his Divisional Plan the best he saw for El Alamein, his career tailed off thereafter; a brief sojourn as Director of Infantry, but retired in 1946. I know there is a biography of him in the works..
