    336 BATTERY NOMINAL ROLL - 26 NOVEMBER 1945

I thought I had previously posted this document, I obtained several years ago, from a relative of P.G. Dowdall, BSM of 336 Battery. It is not found in the unit's war diary.

  3. Hi Rob/all.

Have come across some extra information that is quite an exciting find and adds to the more personal side of research.

I purchased a book on my Kindle when I first had it 3 years ago called 'In the Face of the enemy. A battery Sergeant Major in action in the Second World War.' It follows the memoirs of Ernest Powdrill MC through Dunkirk and then Normandy to Germany in 13th HAC regiment RHA. I have read the book a few times, however it was not until a few days ago when I decided to read it on the way to the tank museum at Bovington that, after the research with 102 LAA and John Lance I noticed something.

Ernest and his regiment sailed from Tilbury on LST.51 on the same day 338 BTY do on the 13th. That itself was quite an awesome moment knowing that John and his BTY were in the same area heading for France. However, Ernest goes on to tell a story how upon leaving Tilbury, 'the ship began to pitch and roll in an alarming matter' and very soon after some of the tanks, guns and sextons on board broke free from their chains and were smashing into the sides of the ship and petrol cans.

The best piece of information is that as well as this, Ernest goes on to say that they spend the night of the 13 June rounding the coast and proceeding westwards. At some time in the early morning of the 14th, as the convoy approached Piccadilly, the ship struck a submerged obstacle causing it to list to port.

He writes 'there was a horrible scraping sound from the bottom of the ship and as I apprehensively leaned on the rails to find out what was going on, I saw to my amazement and alarm some of the American crew boarding a lowered lifeboat!' 'The ship limped on for a short distance and then began to go around in circles - something had happened to the Steering gear. This was disconcerting because we were apart of an enormous convoy and the other ships had to manouvre around us, wondering no doubt what on earth we were up to'.

I guess it is safe to say that MT54 and 338 BTY were apart of this convoy and saw what was happening!

It is stories like this that again tend to add a more broader depth into research.

This morning I received a unit photograph from a relative of A/Serjeant Leslie BURCHNALL who served in my Dad's Regiment. I have been hoping to find such a photo for 12 years, one with my Dad in it. I knew he served in 336 Battery from his service records, but not which Troop. A very satisfying moment.

Hi Rob, I have spotted a name on the list and it rang a bell, my Father was in correspondence with Mr W A Watson and after reading some of those letters, they became friends. I think they even spoke on the telephone.
    Thanks for sharing the list.

Good afternoon Rob. I hope you could answer a query concerning Sergeant Savage. On you list you have two men of that name, William Henry - 4806614 and Arthur Frederick - 4809197 and I am trying to find if either of them was a sergeant on July 1, 1944. Would be most grateful to hear from you. My email address is hq@afterthebattle.com.

Buteman 336/102 LAA Regiment (7 Lincolns), RA

I've been communicating over the last couple of days with the family of a former soldier of my Dad's Battery and troop. He has recently reached the age of 100 and was also given a French Legion D'Honneur 2 years ago.

    His name is PARTRIDGE, W.A.C., 4808127, A/SERGEANT of 336 battery b troop.

Then. He was the only one wearing the General Service Cap.

Battery photo, front row, 2 from left. He was a Bombadier in January 1944. My Dad was in the next row up, second from right.

    Now.

Wearing his latest medal. Report from The Grantham Journal.

A local World War Two veteran has received the Légion d’honneur after his heroic exploits on the beaches of Normandy in June 1944.

Walter Alfred Charles Partridge, of George Street, Grantham, received the prestigious honour at a special ceremony at the Mayor’s Parlour last Wednesday, just three months before his 98th birthday.

The French government has been awarding the Légion d’honneur to D-Day veterans from many different countries for several years, as a way of honouring and thanking those who fought and risked their lives to secure France’s liberation during the Second World War.

Lastly, can anyone identify this medal ribbon?

After a long search of t'internet and much discussion with Rob, I am sure it's the Special Constabulary Long Service Medal.
