I am looking for information on my Grandfather who served in the 1st Field Squadron Royal Engineers from at least 1934. I am most interested in the WWII years, wanting to know (or how to find) what happened to him and the Squadron during those years. I am currently serving in the Australian Army and we are researching relatives who have served.

You may be interested in a book just published 'From a Hard Place to a Rock' published by Troubador June 2022. It details the accounts of two officers from the 1st Field Squadron RE, Capt C D Waters (my father) and 2/Lt D Lennon, who were captured at St-Valéry but managed to escape from the line of march. Making their way through France to Marseille, then over the Pyrenees to Spain they were again captured and held by the Spanish authorities. Whilst awaiting release they wrote a journal of their escape. This book is centred around the journal but also includes the story of other escapees they met en route (three of whom were Sappers from other units), including Chris's cousin, Capt J R Johnson RWF, who had been shot and captured at Robecq but managed to escape from hospital. Sadly when they were finally released Gibraltar was not the safe haven they had hoped for. A retaliatory Vichy bombing raid meant not all of their party were to complete a home run.
