    Welcome aboard,

There are a few threads here on 1/9th GR, none at a quick look for January 1944 and most focus on Cassino. Id'd them using an online search: "1/9th gurkha" site:ww2talk.com. More id'd with: "1/9 gurkha" site:ww2talk.com again none for January 1944.

In 2023 Gary Tankard, a member who is often in the National Archives, was collecting their War Diaries and has January 1944. See Post 9: 1/9 Gurkha war diary I will alert him you have landed and may seek his help.

His name has not appeared here before your post.

I've added his CWGC link, as it may help others: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/f...etails/2071116/lal-bahadur-sing/#&gid=1&pid=1 I note he is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial, as his body was not recovered.

Cheers David. I didn't know you had the diary, though your post were seen.

Curious that 'casualties' were brought back, as his body was not available to bury.

I am in Cassino CWGC cemetery in early April if you would like a photo of his name in gold letters on the panel for 9 GR.

    Regards

Frank means that your great-grandfather's name appears on the Cassino Memorial.

He will visit the cemetery where this memorial is and will take a photo of it if you want him to.

  12. I have heard that he was wounded by a bullet to the stomach and later passed away, but I am not sure if this is true.

  13. Got it. Thanks Charley!

  14. That would mean a lot to me. If it's not too much trouble, I would really appreciate it if Frank could take a photo of my great-grandfather's name on the Cassino Memorial. Thank you so much for the kind offer!

    James,

easier said than done. Only ever done that once and that was for your lot-the 1/4 Essex Regt has you will recall.

I gave up on the 2/7Mx years ago after about the sixth visit.. Anyway two names need removing from panel 9. Not waisting my time in trying again of which is futile. Shit panel anyway to take a decent shot thats legible.

    R,
    Stu.
