Hi, how do I find information about 542 Bulk Petroleum Company in North Africa and Italy or 377 Petroleum Platoon in Austria (post-WW2)?

Unless there are any specific unit histories you will need to look for the relevant diaries held in the national archives. You should use the Discovery Search Engine Discovery | The National Archives
Go to the advanced option and put 542 in the All of these words box. In the Search for or within these references put WO in the first box. Try different searches with RASC, Bulk, Coy or Petrol entered in the Exact Word or Phrase box.
That should get you a range of hits of which one comes up if you include 'bulk' or 'petrol' - for Feb 43 but the 166 series implies Home Forces (UK based). However the other hits have a good chance of being of interest even without specific reference to Petrol and being in the 169 and 175 series, are geographically located as Middle East Forces or British North Africa Forces plus a single 170 reference for 1944 which will be Italy.
Do the same for 377 and Petrol and there is a diary for April - June 46.
If you are struggling then get back on the thread.
