I've taken the train along the shore of Lake Michigan near Chicago. It's weird after several hours of flat farmland in the middle of America to suddenly start seeing sandy, beach-like soil and the kind of stunted pine trees you get along the Atlantic coast. Imagine what the first white explorers must have felt when they pushed through the seemingly endless American forest to find themselves on the shore of a vast inland sea.
One of the Hollywood moments about the Devil`s Brigade. I have yet to find out why the regiment was disbanded. Politics with a question mark.
I don't know the specifics, but I do know that the Force suffered severe casualties, especially at the Mignano Gap, and the standard of training for the Force was so high that it was difficult to replace those losses quickly. In any case, the US Army of those days did not favor what have been called 'trick outfits.'
My dad was in the FSSF for the middle 1/3 of his war. They were disbanded for a number of reasons. Their skills in mountain fighting, jump and night recon weren't needed. They were in a very weakened state and replacement was a problem. Some went home. Those with jump wings went into the 101st Airborn. The rest, remnants of the 1st and 3rd Ranger Btns entered the newly formed 474th Infantry. Right TTH. 99th Inf Separate that was a commando unit comprised of Norwegian Americans was also folded into the 474th
