Gents, CAB66/4 lists HMS Imogen as being damaged due to enemy action on 25th November 1939. ADM234/444 doesn't list the destroyer as being damaged on this date, but CWGC lists one casualty. TADGELL, William, Able Seaman, C/JX 151449 Any ideas what form the 'enemy action' took and if it did occur whether the destroyer sustained any damage? Regards
Imogen, destroyer TADGELL, William, Able Seaman, C/JX 151449, killed Royal Navy casualties, killed and died, November 1939 HMS Imogen (D 44) of the Royal Navy - British Destroyer of the I class - Allied Warships of WWII - uboat.net
Yes, thanks for that. So as far I can see from the entries in both uboat.net and naval-history.net, the destroyer was not involved in any 'enemy action' on the 25th November 1939 other than searching for the German raiders, so I'm confused by the CAB66/4 entry saying 'damaged by enemy action'. Steve
Nothing about being involved in enemy action but: From naval-history.net Saturday 25 Nov 39 Destroyers INGLEFIELD, IMOGEN and IMPERIAL were ordered at 1015 to Scapa Flow to refuel. IMOGEN lost a rating overboard in heavy weather. Tim
Hi Tim, Thanks for that, that will explain the unfortunate loss of AB Tadgell and confirms that the destroyer was involved in 'enemy action'. Regards, Steve
Monday 20th May 1940 HMS Delight SQUIRE, Christopher J, Ordinary Seaman, P/JX 165230, killed [HARSTAD CEMETERY] The destroyer was alongside merchant vessel Balteako when it was badly damaged after a German air attack at Harstad. So it is possible it sustained some damage and suffered the loss of OS Squire. No damage is listed in ADM234/444 or mentioned by uboat.net and naval-history.net Any ideas? Regards, Steve
Steve, From NavalHistory SQUIRE, Christopher J, Ordinary Seaman, P/JX 165230, Delight, 21 May 1940, bombing, killed Regards Hugh
Gents, 29th May 1940 HMS Gossamer HOOK, Harry W R, Stoker Petty Officer, C/KX 75635, MPK [ChM] HMS Harvester BEARE, Phillip W, Petty Officer Steward, C/L 14552, missing [ChM] HMS Lydd SINCLAIR, Stephen P M, Able Seaman, C/JX 152005, killed [RAMSGATE CEMETERY] Were any of the vessels damaged in the incidents that resulted in the death of their crewmember. They were all involved in Dunkirk operations on this date (with HMS Lydd carrying out the unfortunate friendly fire incident which resulted in the sinking of the danlayer Comfort). Any ideas? Regards Steve
